Netflix Rentals
Watched some movies over the weekend that we chose to bypass in theaters:

Capsule review: A little too much Hanks (Colin AND Tom), but John Malkovich and Emily Blunt are very good. A fun, witty script with lots of 70s references, so I was in heaven. Pleasantly surprised. Recommended - it’s an enjoyable film.

Capsule review: A little too much Clooney and I’m not a big fan of Jason Reitman, but good performances and a smart script (”I like a party that feels like The Riddler might crash it”). The corporate layoff sadness made me think of one of those films from the Depression that depicted onetime socialites who have become hobos. Really a documentation of our troubled times.

Capsule review: A pretentious independent movie that thinks it’s way hipper and cuter than it actually is. Horrible.
Liquor Store

Just when did it become okay to take your kids to a liquor store?!? I stopped at our Pasadena branch of Beverages & More over the weekend and encountered a man & woman pushing a baby in a stroller(!) as well as a father with two rambunctious 6-year-old girls (who proceeded to run away from him, careen around the store and wound up breaking several bottles of wine). Now, I’m no prude, but really, kids have no business being in a store that primarily sells booze. I remember being shocked at the number of children roaming the bars the last time I visited Walt Disney World’s now-defunct Pleasure Island. Seriously, have we become so indulgent of our children that there is there no objection to this?
Kevin Keller

There’s a “hot new guy” in Riverdale - and he’s not interested in Veronica. Archie Comics gets a new character - the openly gay high school student Kevin Keller. I knew there was a reason I used to read these comic books religiously when I was a wee lad!

Unhealthy Sandwiches

Via fivethirtyeight.com - Nate Silver returns, this time to determine the unhealthiest fast food sandwich using math. The chart uses one (1) KFC Double Down as a unit of comparison, though it turns out that the Double Down isn't actually the unhealthiest in statistical terms. (Congratulations, Wendy’s!) Print and save wallet-size for future reference!
Patty Wagon

Downtown LA is witnessing a profusion of food trucks these days, with cuisine ranging from grilled cheese to Dim Sum. I grabbed lunch from the cleverly named Patty Wagon today, and I think the mini-burgers that I had - with grilled peppers, onions and homemade ketchup - were the best I’ve ever eaten. The ground beef, from grass-fed cattle in Idaho, was unbelievably juicy and delicious. Oh, and the hand-cut fries come in two varieties: sea salt or rosemary and garlic. Hoo-whee!

Easter Weekend

Philip Jake and I drove up the Central California coast over the Easter weekend, staying overnight in the picturesque town of Cambria. Jake had a great time exploring the beach at San Simeon and the sound of the roaring waves on Moonstone Beach was soothing and relaxing.
